River Herring Spawn

April 21, 2016 Jay Fleming

The recent warm weather raised water temperatures and pushed Alewife Herring and other anadromous fish up to their spawning grounds. Every spring, River Herring come from the Atlantic Ocean back to the same streams where they were born to reproduce. Unlike Pacific Salmon, River Herring do not die after spawning. If they are able to survive, herring will be able to spawn multiple times.

Earlier this week, I found 5000+ Alewife in a small stream off the Susquehanna River. Dry weather has certainly made for great water clarity in the Chesapeake's tributaries.

Clear water and Abundant Grasses - Spring on the Chesapeake Bay

April 18, 2016 Jay Fleming

On Saturday, 4/16/2016, I took reporter Tyler Butler from WBOC TV 16 Delmarva's News Leader out on the Honga River to show him the abundance of Eel Grass for a upcoming story he is doing.

Here is a short clip I put together from footage I took while shooting still frames. It is great to see such clear water and thick grass! Grasses are equally important as oysters for habitat, filtering water and lessening shoreline erosion.

Water temperature was 53 degrees.
