Annapolis Photography Workshops - August

~8 Hours - $500.00

Photography workshops out of Annapolis, Maryland in August take students on the water at sunrise to photograph iconic watermarks near the mouth of the Severn River. Participants will have the opportunity to photograph the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, working watermen, Sandy Point Lighthouse, Thomas Point Lighthouse and more during the ~3 hour trip out on the water. Jay will cater to the photography needs of each student while providing expert tips on how to create unique photographs. After the early morning session on the water, students will meet Jay at his studio on Kent Island, Maryland to review the morning’s work. Jay will provide expert tips on editing, retouching and studio workflow. Each student will have the opportunity to print one of their select photographs from the morning on Jay’s large format printer. The workshop concludes after the studio session. Price for the workshop includes the following: Photography instruction, time on the boat, lunch, studio instruction and printing. The workshop is limited to five participants.

Filmmaker, Alexander Glass, joined me out on the water for one of my Annapolis photography workshops in 2018. His video highlights what we do during the workshop, both on the water and in the studio.

Smith Island Photography Workshops - May/June

3 Days - $2100.00

Photography workshops out of Smith Island, Maryland take photographers to one of the Chesapeake Bay’s most unique and remote environments. Jay has taken over 100 photographers to Smith Island on the three-day workshop since he started offering photography workshops in 2015. Photographers of all skill levels are drawn to the island by the unique opportunities to photograph wildlife, working waterman and the island community. Participants will be fully immersed into the island’s way of life - conversing with the islanders, eating locally harvested seafood and becoming familiar with the island’s waterways. The island hosts the Chesapeake’s largest Brown Pelican colony, with 2000+ birds utilizing the island’s shoreline as their annual nesting location. Unique waterscapes and historically significant structures surround the perimeter of the island. The island’s watermen ply the shallow waters for Blue Crabs every day of the week except Sunday. The access to a variety of subjects on the Smith Island workshop is sure to keep photographers of all skill levels busy during the activity packed three days. Price for the workshop includes lodging, food, photography instruction, boat transportation while on the island and transportation to/from Crisfield. The workshop is limited to six participants.

Hoopers ISLAND PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP - October

3 DAYS

Photography workshops out of Hoopers Island, Maryland take photographers to one of the Chesapeake Bay in Dorchester County. The seemingly endless marshes of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and the working waterfronts of Hoopers Island are a perfect backdrop for photographing iconic Chesapeake landscapes, waterscapes, traditions and wildlife. Workboats abandoned along the shorelines, watermen pulling in pound nets at sunrise and a working crab picking house are among the many subjects covered during the three-day workshop. The price for the workshop includes waterfront lodging, food, photography instruction, and boat/land transportation during the workshop. The workshop is limited to four participants.

Eastern Shore of Virginia Photography Workshop - JuLY

3 Days

Photography workshops out of the small village of Wachapreague, Virginia take photographers to a remote corner of the Delmarva peninsula with easy access to the barrier islands bordering Atlantic Ocean. Watermen work the waters of the seaside during the summer for Blue Crabs, Oysters and Hard Clams. Participants will be able to photograph watermen in action and later dine on their catches. A traditional clam steam on a waterfront wharf will help complete the image of the seaside’s clam aquaculture industry. The remote barrier island beaches host an incredible number and variety of nesting waterbirds during the summer months - Black Skimmers, Piping Plovers, American Oystercatchers, and more. Abandoned coast guard stations, hunting lodges and lighthouses line the shoreline of the “ESVA” and in the right lighting conditions are sure to appeal to any landscape photographer. The price for the workshop includes lodging, food, photography instruction, and boat transportation. The workshop is limited to four participants.

Jay is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed boat captain with more than 600 documented days on the water in the last five years.
